About this Event
This program targets individuals who live, work, or volunteer in rural communities in Maryland (Allegany, Calvert, Caroline, Carroll, Cecil, Charles, Dorchester, Frederick, Garrett, Harford, Kent, Queen Anne’s, Somerset, St. Mary’s, Talbot, Washington, Wicomico and Worcester).
Event Description:
Youth Mental Health First Aid is designed to teach parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, peers, neighbors, health and human services workers, and other caring citizens how to help an adolescent (age 12-18) who is experiencing a mental health or addictions challenge or is in crisis. Youth Mental Health First Aid is primarily designed for adults who regularly interact with young people. The course introduces common mental health challenges for youth, reviews typical adolescent development, and teaches a 5-step action plan for how to help young people in both crisis and non-crisis situations. Topics covered include anxiety, depression, substance use, disorders in which psychosis may occur, disruptive behavior disorders (including AD/HD), and eating disorders.

Dear Program Participant,
Thank you for your interest in the Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) program. YMHFA is an 8-hour course in-person (6 hours virtual) being offered by the University of Maryland Extension (UME). The goal of YMHFA is to strengthen people’s skills to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. Evidence shows that the program builds mental health literacy and helps those in the general public to identify and know how to respond to mental illness. Topics discussed include common mental health challenges that one could experience, such as depression and mood disorders, anxiety disorders, trauma, and substance abuse disorders. Trainees are taught to apply YMHFA’s 5-step action plan in potential crises. This project is funded by SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) under the Rural Opioid Technical Assistance (ROTA) program (grant # H79TI082561).
In addition to the YMHFA’s training, we would greatly appreciate completing two online surveys as part of a study (each survey will take approximately 10 minutes). The training program and surveys will help us to enhance our programming, in order to increase participants’ satisfaction, skill achievement, and motivation to implement practices. The first survey will be administered upon completion of the training (post-test). The second survey will be administered in about 30 days after the training (follow-up). You will receive an invitation via email with the link to the online survey from us. Your answers are confidential and your individual answers will not be linked to your identity.
Your participation is voluntary. If you decide to participate in this program, you may stop participating at any time. If you decide not to participate in this study or if you stop participating at any time, you will not be penalized or lose any benefits to which you otherwise qualify. You can participate in the YMHFA program without completing the surveys. For more information about the study, you can click here.
